Wrestling Announces Class Of 2013

WEST POINT, N.Y. Army head coach Chuck Barbee recently announced the members of the Class of 2013 that will join the Black Knight wrestling squad for the upcoming season. The tenth-year coach will welcome a strong contingent from the U.S Military Academy Prep School (USMAPS) into the fold, along with a solid direct-admit lot for the 2009-10 season.

“I am extremely excited about the group of guys we have coming in this year,” said Barbee. “My coaching staff and I really worked hard to educate these guys on what a world class opportunity West Point can provide and I really believe that this may be the best recruiting class we have had in my years here at Army.

“It is never easy breaking into the starting line-up as a freshman, but there are a host of competitors in this class that will challenge to do exactly that. I think over the next four years, we will see quite a few of these young men make their mark on the Army Wrestling Program.”

Steven West (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain H.S.), Eric Gobin (Maineville, Ohio/Archbishop Mueller) and Alan Lutterman headline the list of names that will call West Point home after spending a year at USMAPS. West was a three-time Alabama state champion and a NHSCA All-America in 2008 who finished his high school career with a 184-14 record. He capped his prep year by winning a National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NWCA) Championship at 133 pounds while at USMAPS. Gobin was a NCWA runner-up at 165 a year ago after placing at the Ohio state high school championships for three years. A high school state place-winner from North Dakota, Lutterman spent a year enlisted in the Army before attending the prep school where he finished fourth at the NCWA Championships as a heavyweight last season.

Tennessee State Champion Patrick Marchettii (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan H.S.) will wrestle at 165 at West Point after winning back-to-back high school state titles following a pair of third-place finishes to cap his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Ranked eighth in the Southeast by flowrestling.com, he was also recognized with Honorable Mention honors nationally by Wrestling Magazine.

Former Minnesota State Champion Kevin O’Brien (Becker, Minn./Becker H.S.) could also make an immediate impact at 165 after compiling a 171-30 record over the last four years. A 2008 Minnesota Junior National Dual Team member and a 2008 Central Junior Regional Greco Roman champion, he was ranked 16th in Win Magazine’s preseason rankings, while Wrestling Magazine gave him a ranking of 23rd nationally following the season.

Three talented newcomers are currently penciled in at 141 pounds for the Black Knights. Joey Walters (Pleasant Unity, Pa./Greater Latrobe H.S.) finished runner up at the Pennsylvania State Championships as a senior and was a member of the prestigious Dapper Dan PA Team during the season. Jordan Thome (Troy, Ohio/Troy Christian Academy), who is the younger brother of current Black Knight and rising junior Casey Thome, finished runner-up at the Ohio State Championships and totaled a high school record of 154-38, while three-time Nebraska State Champion Quintin Cottle (Fort Calhoun, Neb./Omaha Skutt Catholic) will start his collegiate career after prepping for a season at Wyoming Seminary.

Daniel Young (Bloomington, Ind./Culver Military Academy), who was crowned Indiana State Champion in 2009 following a third-place effort the season before, is slated to compete at 149 pounds for Army, while two-time Arizona State Champion and NHSCA All-American Ryan Renkey (Brandon, Fla./Brandon H.S.), who also won a state title after moving to Florida a year ago, will be in the mix at 125 pounds. Two-time Missouri State Champion and four-time state place-winner Collin Wittmeyer (Platte City, Mo./Platte County H.S.) will challenge for the top slot at 174 pounds.
