WEST POINT, N.Y. - Four members of the Army wrestling team were ranked among the top 33 in the nation in their respective weight classes when the first installment of the NCAA Division I Coaches’ Poll was announced yesterday.
Sophomore Brian Harvey (174 pounds) was voted 28th, senior Ryan Tompkins (184) and junior Chandler Smith (165) each ranked 30th, and senior Paul Hancock (157) was tied for 32nd.
Harvey is 20-7 so far in 2013-14, including a perfect 4-0 mark in dual matches, while Tompkins stands 18-7 and lists 6-1 in duals. Smith currently leads all Black Knights with 25 victories (25-8) that include four wins in dual matches this year (4-0), and is tied for first on the team with five major decisions. Hancock enters the week with a 17-9 record, while posting a 6-2 dual-match mark. The senior’s five major decisions are tied for the team lead, and his nine bonus-point wins are second among Army wrestlers.
The Black Knights (5-3, 4-3 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) will continue their dual schedule on Sunday, Jan. 26 with a pair of matches in Philadelphia, Pa. Army with take on Penn at 1 p.m. before meeting Drexel at 7 p.m.
