DES MOINES, Iowa -
Army's four national qualifiers competed on the opening day of the NCAA Championships on Thursday inside Wells Fargo Arena.
Senior 141-pounder Connor Hanafee opened the day by dropping a 12-2 major decision to Northern Iowa's Joey Lazor. Hanafee then exited the NCAAs by falling to West Virginia's Nathan Pennesi, 5-3.
Senior 149-pounder Daniel Young suffered a 4-2 setback to Minnesota's sixth-seeded Dylan Ness in his opening-round match. Young dropped into the consolation draw where he was pinned by Penn State's 11th-seeded Andrew Alton in 2 minutes, 5 seconds to bow out of the national tournament.
Junior 165-pounder Paul Hancock was upended by Michigan's 12th-seeded Taylor Massa, 11-7, in his first bout of the day. Hancock was then eliminated from competition when he suffered a 10-4 setback to Pittsburgh's Tyler Wilps in the consolation bracket.
Freshman 197-pounder Bryce Barnes dropped his initial match, falling to Bloomsburg's Richard Perry in sudden victory, 7-5. Barnes then bowed out of the NCAAs by dropping an 8-6 decision to Virginia Tech's Derrick Borlie.
Tournament Notes: Connor Hanafee finishes his most successful season at West Point with a 21-15 overall record ... he closes his Army career with a 52-39 mark ... Daniel Young ends the season with a 16-14 overall record ... he finishes his career with a 70-47 mark ... Paul Hancock's ends his best season at Army with a 32-12 overall record ... Bryce Barnes finishes his first season at West Point with a 25-20 overall mark.
