PRINCETON, N.J. - The Army wrestling team completed the first day of competition at the 108th EIWA Championships on Saturday afternoon inside Jadwin Gym on the campus of Princeton University.

The Black Knights have racked up 44 points and reside in ninth place out of 14 schools. Five-time defending champion Cornell leads the way with 136.5 points. Lehigh is in second place with 119 points, followed by American (88.5), Pennsylvania (81) and Navy (79.5).

Six Army wrestlers remain in contention in the consolation draw following the opening day of action.

Freshman Cole Gracey and senior Derek Stanley have wrestled their way into the consolation semifinals, while four other Black Knights will compete in seventh-place bouts tomorrow.

Gracey, seeded sixth at 165 pounds, began the day by knocking off Harvard's Ian Roy (7-4) and defeating third-seeded Marshall Peppelman of Cornell (4-2). The talented freshman was then upended by Rutgers' second-seeded Scott Winston, 7-4, and he will begin Sunday's action just two wins away from placing third.

Stanley, meanwhile, posted a 3-1 mark on Day One to advance to the consolation semifinals. The fourth-year grappler downed Brown's Brandon Vorrius, 8-1, in his first bout of the day, before dropping a 7-3 decision to second-seeded Micah Burak of Pennsylvania. Stanley rebounded by defeating Sacred Heart's Sam Morrison (8-0) and Harvard's sixth-seeded James Fox (5-3).

Freshman Scott Filbert (125 pounds), junior Jordan Thome (133), senior Michael Gorman (184) and senior Daniel Mills (285) have earned a spot in their respective seventh-place bouts tomorrow.

Filbert went 2-2 with a pair of bonus-point victories. He began the tournament by pinning Franklin & Marshall's David Hershberger in one minute, 16 seconds. Then, after dropping into the consolation draw, Filbert posted a 16-0 technical fall opposite Harvard's Max Mejia. Filbert ended his day by being pinned by fourth-seeded Thomas Williams of American (1:32).

Like Filbert, Thome compiled a 2-2 mark with a pin and technical fall. The Troy, Ohio, native pinned Sacred Heart's Andrew Polidore in 2:55, before falling into the consolation bracket. Thome regrouped to record a 19-2 technical fall against American's Corey Borshoff. Thome suffered an 8-2 setback to seventh-seeded Naryman Arujau of Cornell, and will wrestle for seventh place when action resumes tomorrow.

Gorman registered a 1-2 record today, with his lone win coming against American's Thomas Barreiro (7-6). Mills, meanwhile, was 2-2 on the opening day of the championships. The fourth-year wrestler defeated Princeton's Charles Fox, 10-8, in his first bout of the tournament, and later scored an 8-7 decision versus Brown's Marcos Aranda.
