WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Senior Daniel Young posted a major decision at 149 pounds and two other Army wrestlers won bouts, but Navy was victorious in the seven remaining matchups as the Midshipmen took a 22-10 decision from the Black Knights in the Star Match Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena.
Navy (6-1, 3-1 EIWA) led 9-0 after three bouts, but Army (7-7, 3-3 EIWA) won three of the next four weights to pull to within 13-10. The Midshipmen went on to take the final three bouts, however, to account for the final margin.
The match began at 285 pounds and Dan Miller gave Navy a quick 3-0 lead by posting an 8-2 victory opposite Army freshman Bryce Barnes. Miller, who finished with four minutes of riding time, totaled two takedowns and one reversal en route to the win.
Navy extended its lead to 6-0 as Patrick Prada took a 3-1 sudden-victory decision from Army sophomore Hunter Wood in the 125-pound bout. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation, but Prada took Wood to the mat late in the overtime period to secure the victory.
The Midshipmen made it 9-0 following Colton Rasche's 3-1 triumph versus Army senior Jordan Thome at 133 pounds. Rasche registered a takedown in the first period and rode that to the win. Thome ended the match with over three minutes of riding time, but was unable to get anything going against Rasche.
Army got on the scoreboard in the 141-pound bout as Black Knight senior Connor Hanafee topped Joe Locksmith, 8-5. The match was tied at 4-all early in the third period, but Hanafee posted a pair of takedowns in the final stanza to earn the three-point decision.
The Black Knights pulled to within 9-7 when Young recorded a 13-5 major decision against Raymond Borja at 149 pounds. Young, who dominated the bout from start to finish, registered a takedown just before the final buzzer to earn the bonus-point victory and bring the 919 spectators at Christl Arena to their feet.
Navy's Bobby Barnhisel dominated Army junior John Belanger in the 157-pound bout, scoring a 14-0 major decision to increase the Mids' lead to 13-7. Barnhisel led 9-0 after the first period and never looked back en route to earning the bonus points.
Army came back in the 165-pound matchup as junior Paul Hancock took a 9-5 decision from Peyton Walsh. Hancock totaled three takedowns and one reversal en route to his team-leading 28th victory of the season.
Navy reestablished a six-point cushion (16-10) thanks to Mathew Miller's 5-3 verdict versus Army sophomore Cole Gracey. Miller, who came into this week's action nationally ranked, trailed 2-0 before scoring five points late in the second period. Miller took Gracey to the mat to tie the score and then collected three back points to take a 5-2 edge entering the final stanza. Miller then held Gracey off in the third period to earn the victory.
Miller's win seemed to swing the momentum Navy's way, and the Midshipmen clinched the match in the 184-pound bout as Mason Bailey beat Army junior Ryan Tompkins, 4-2. Bailey led 3-0 after two periods and added a riding-time point to earn the win, which gave the Midshipmen an insurmountable 19-10 advantage.
Oscar Huntley capped the match by scoring a 10-4 victory opposite Army senior Collin Wittmeyer at 197 pounds. Huntley took Wittmeyer to the mat four times and accrued more than two minutes of riding time.
Army will return to action March 8-9, when the Black Knights travel to Piscataway, N.J., to compete at the 109th EIWA Championships.
