WEST POINT, N.Y. - Harvard won six of the 10 bouts, including three for bonus points, as the Crimson defeated Army, 23-16, in an EIWA dual match Sunday afternoon at Gillis Field House.

Harvard (3-4, 1-3 EIWA) won four of the first five bouts to assume an early 17-6 lead and held off the Black Knights en route to its first conference victory of the season. Senior Jordan Thome pinned his opponent at 133 pounds and junior Paul Hancock registered a major decision at 165 pounds to lead Army (5-6, 2-2 EIWA).

Harvard took a 6-0 advantage as Jeffrey Ott pinned Army sophomore Hunter Wood in 3 minutes, 46 seconds at 125 pounds. Ott racked up a series of takedowns and near falls before recording the pin midway through the second period.

Thome followed with a pin of his own in the 133-pound match, taking Ryan Osleeb to the mat in 5:50. The bout was scoreless entering the third period, but Thome was able to turn Osleeb near the beginning of the final frame en route to his second pin of the day.

Harvard moved back in front, 10-6, as 13th-ranked Steven Keith posted a dominant 9-0 major decision versus Army junior Tyler Rauenzahn at 141 pounds. Keith accumulated more than five minutes of riding time en route to the bonus-point victory.

The Crimson extended its lead to 13-6 as Todd Preston edged Army junior John Belanger, 2-1, in the 149-pound bout. Preston racked up more than one minute of riding time, and that proved to be the difference in the match.

Harvard made it 17-6 as eighth-ranked Walter Peppelman scored an 11-2 major decision against Army freshman Brian Harvey in the 157-pound bout. Peppelman led 8-0 after the first period en route to the bonus-point victory, which gave the Crimson a comfortable 11-point cushion at the midway point of the match.

Hancock halted Harvard's string of consecutive victories and helped Army trim the Crimson's lead to 17-10 as the third-year standout recorded a 13-5 major decision opposite Devon Gobbo at 165 pounds. Hancock registered five take downs and accrued more than three minutes of riding time en route to the bonus-point win.

The Black Knights continued to chip away at Harvard's advantage as sophomore Cole Gracey earned an 8-3 victory versus Cameron Croy at 174 pounds. Gracey finished with two takedowns and one reversal en route to the win, which cut Army's deficit to 17-13 with three bouts remaining.

Army crept to within 17-16 when junior Ryan Tompkins rallied for a 9-5 victory versus Josh Popple at 184 pounds. Tompkins trailed 5-2 late in the second period before reeling off seven straight points en route to the win.

Harvard reestablished its four-point edge when James Fox recorded a 10-5 decision against Army freshman Bryce Barnes in the 197-pound bout. Fox took Barnes to the mat four times during the match.

The Crimson padded the final margin as David Ng took a 7-4 decision from Army sophomore Curtis Garner in the heavyweight bout.

Army continues its extended stretch of home competitions on Saturday, Feb. 2, when the Black Knights host the 19th annual All-Academy Championships at Gillis Field House. The action is set to get under way at 10 a.m., with finals slated for 4 p.m.
