HAMPTON, Va. -
Four Army wrestlers recorded pins to help the Black Knights overcome an early deficit and defeat The Citadel, 27-19, to reach the consolation quarterfinals at the 33rd annual Virginia Duals on Friday afternoon at Hampton Coliseum.
Senior Jordan Thome (133 pounds), sophomore Cole Gracey (174) and freshmen Travis Mallo (184) and Bryce Barnes (197) all registered wins by fall to lift Army (3-3) into a consolation quarterfinal date with fifth-seeded Boise State tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Army and The Citadel (1-3) split the 10 bouts, but Army's four pins proved to be the difference. The Bulldogs led by nine points following the first five matchups, but the Black Knights rallied to earn the victory.
The Citadel opened a 3-0 lead after winning the 125-pound bout, but Thome pinned Aaron Hansen in 1 minute, 52 seconds to give Army a 6-3 edge. The Citadel won the next three bouts to assume a 15-6 cushion, but the Black Knights stormed back by winning four straight matches (including three pins) to clinch the match.
Junior Paul Hancock began Army's comeback by posting a 10-3 decision versus Nathaniel Harper in the 165-pound bout. Gracey then pulled the Black Knights even (15-15) after taking John Duane to the mat in 4:42.
Mallo needed just 1:52 to collect his first collegiate pin in the next bout, and Barnes completed Army's comeback and clinched the match for the Black Knights when he pinned Marshall Haas in 0:56. Barnes' victory gave Army an insurmountable 27-15 lead.
The Citadel ended the match by posting a major decision verdict in the heavyweight bout to account for the final margin.
