CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Army sophomore tennis player Asika Isoh was named the Patriot League Player of the Year as the men’s tennis awards were announced by the conference on Tuesday. Isoh, who also named to the All-Patriot League first team for the second straight year, was one of three Black Knights to collect conference honors.

Isoh finished the season with team-best records in singles and doubles, including overall and within dual match marks. The Cambia Heights, N.Y., native became the first Player of the Year from Army since 2006, and fourth overall. Competing exclusively at No. 1 in both singles and doubles, Isoh went 21-13 in singles, 15-8 in duals, and 22-15 in doubles, including 17-10 in dual matches.

The sophomore teamed with classmate Henry Jang-Milsten for the majority of the season as the pair went 16-10 in dual matches to list fourth on Army’s single-season wins list. Isoh’s 17 doubles wins rank tied for eighth on the individual single-season ledger.

Isoh was joined on the first team by freshman Alex Van Velzer. Van Velzer spent the majority of the dual slate at No. 2 singles and doubles. In singles play, the Montgomery, Texas, native tied for second on the team in overall wins with 18, including 14 in dual matches. Alongside classmate Peter Sienko, the pair went 10-7 in duals, including 2-0 in the Patriot League Tournament.

Sienko earned second-team honors which was anchored by a gutsy performance at the conference championship. Sienko won in straight sets in the quarterfinals and semifinals before his contest went unfinished against Navy in the title match. He finished the season with an 18-14 singles mark to tie for second on the squad with Van Velzer.

"We're excited for sure," said Army head coach Jim Poling. "I've always felt Asika was one of the best players in the conference, so he's very deserving of the award. For Alex and Peter to be recognized as freshmen is great and they'll only continue to get better."

The Black Knights advanced to the Patriot League finals for the 10th year in a row, falling to Navy, 4-1, in Annapolis, Md. Army finished the season with a 16-13 record, including 4-2 in conference matches. The 16 victories are the most by a Black Knight unit since 2008, when they matched that total and also fell to the Midshipmen in the title match.

The three all-league certificates are the most for Army since 2010, when they matched that figure. The Black Knights have had more All-Patriot League selections than any other program in conference history, totaling 65 recognitions. Navy ranks second with 55.
