WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army men's tennis junior Alex Van Velzer and sophomore Harrison McCormick were selected to the Patriot League All-Academic Team Monday afternoon. Additionally, Van Velzer garnered the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades.
The all-academic nod is the first for both McCormick and Van Velzer.
An International Relations major, Van Velzer carries a 3.67 grade-point average as a second-semester junior. Van Velzer is the fifth member of the men's tennis program to be named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the first since Eddie Kang was honored in 2008. Previous Army winners include Carl Fisher (2005, 2006), Travis Burns (1999, 2000) and Rae Cho (1998).
Van Velzer went 14-4 in singles dual matches, while posting a 7-1 mark in doubles competition. The Montgomery, Texas, native finished the year by winning nine straight singles matches, including three victories in the Patriot League Tournament. Van Velzer dropped just five games over the course of the conference tournament, winning, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals against Lafayette and 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals against Lehigh before registering a 6-0, 6-1 decision versus Navy in the league title match.
Van Velzer competed at the fifth singles position throughout the tournament and helped lead the Black Knights to their sixth Patriot League Championship and first since 2011. Van Velzer also drew the tournament's most-valuable player honors.
McCormick currently holds a 3.65 grade-point average as a Systems Engineering major. The sophomore went 11-2 in singles dual matches and 12-5 in doubles action. The Berwyn, Pa., native saw time at the Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles positions this season, while competing solely at the top doubles flight during the spring. Fifteen of McCormick's 17 doubles matches were played alongside freshman teammate Grant Riechmann.
McCormick competed in a pair of singles matches in the Patriot League Tournament, and played an important role in helping the Black Knights to the conference title. In the quarterfinals, McCormick topped his opponent from Lafayette, 6-0, 6-1, at the sixth position before clinching the Patriot League title with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Navy's Tyler Tossavainen at the No. 6 spot.
Army (20-5) will continue its 2014 season with an NCAA Tournament contest against the University of Virginia on Saturday, May 10 at noon.
