CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Patriot League officially announced the seeding and matchups for this weekend men’s tennis championship on Tuesday, with Army earning the No. 3 seed. The reigning conference champion Black Knights will face No. 6 Lafayette in the tournament’s quarterfinal round on Friday at 3 p.m. Navy will serve as host for the event, with all matches slated for the USNA Tennis Courts.
Army (14-12, 4-2 PL) will be playing its first quarterfinal match since 2009 after capturing the regular-season title and accompanying first-round bye for the past two seasons.
Army is 6-0 all-time in Patriot League Championship first-round matches, 17-1 in semifinals, and 7-10 in the finals. The Black Knights have advanced to the championship match every year but one since the Patriot League changed to a team format in 1994. Their lone semifinal setback was to eventual-champion American in 2002.
Lafayette (3-10, 1-4 PL), which will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday against Lehigh, has only one postseason win in conference history. In the 2008 tournament, the fifth-seeded Leopards upset No. 4 Colgate, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.
The 10-time Patriot League Champion Black Knights and Leopards have met twice in tournament history, both in first-round contests, with Army earning shutout victories on both occasions: 4-0 in 2009; 7-0 in 1998.
Army and Lafayette faced off in the 2012 regular season at West Point on Feb. 26. The Black Knights swept the Leopards, 7-0, to improve to 33-3-2 all-time against their league foe. Lafayette last beat Army in 1988.
This season, Army is led by sophomore Asika Isoh. Isoh lists first on the team in overall singles wins (20), dual-match singles wins (14), overall doubles wins (20) and dual-match doubles wins (15), playing exclusively at the No. 1 spots. His 14 solo victories in dual matches are two shy of cracking Army’s all-time single-season wins list. The Cambria Heights, N.Y., native is 4-1 in singles contests against conference opponents this season, with his lone setback coming against Lehigh on April 15, one day following an emotional individual triumph at rival Navy.
Isoh has teamed with classmate Henry Jang-Milsten for 19 of his 20 wins, including a team-best 14 in dual matches. Sophomore Rommel Verano and junior Alex Holland list second on the team with an 11-8 dual-match record, having won five of their last six contests.
The winner of No. 3 Army and No. 6 Lafayette match will face the winner of No. 2 Lehigh and No. 7 Holy Cross on Saturday at 2 p.m., in the day’s second semifinal contest. The first match, slated for 10 a.m., pits top-seeded Navy against the winner of Friday’s showdown between No. 4 Bucknell and No. 5 Colgate.
