SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis will face Navy in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal round on Saturday morning at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y. After finishing the regular season undefeated, the Black Knights earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament and a first-round bye, while the fourth-seeded Midshipmen topped No. 5 Colgate 4-0 to advance to Saturday’s semifinal which is slated to start at 10 a.m.
Army (16-6, 6-0 PL) defeated Navy (16-11, 3-2 PL) 4-3 in the regular season on April 7 at West Point. The Black Knights and Midshipmen have faced off 14 times in Patriot League Tournament history, including last season’s title match which Navy won on its home courts, 4-1. The winner of the regular-season Star Match has gone on to win the postseason showdown as well in 11 of the 14 seasons.
The Midshipmen lead the all-time postseason series 9-5. Only two of the 14 postseason meetings have come in the semifinal round, with Army winning both of them: 4-1 in 2003 and 4-0 in 2005.
Army last earned the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament in 2011. The 2011 season also marked the Black Knights’ last conference championship and accompanying NCAA Tournament bid. Since the Patriot League turned to a team format in 1994, Army has been the No. 1 seed seven times and is a combined 15-1 when playing as the top team. The Black Knights have won the league title six times as the No. 1 seed and seven times overall since 1994.
The winner of the Army-Navy semifinal contest will face the winner of the day’s second semifinal in Sunday’s championship match set for noon. The Patriot League Tournament winner receives the conference’s automatic bid into the 2013 NCAA Championship, with the first and second round scheduled for May 10-12.
