The Army men's tennis team will begin a three-match road trip to California this weekend when it faces the University of California at Irvine and the University of California at Riverside. The Black Knights will meet the Anteaters on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m. ET before making the trip north for a match against the Highlanders on Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m. ET.
Army (7-2) finished 1-1 during two matches in Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 28 and March 2. The Black Knights topped The Citadel, 7-0, on Feb. 28 before dropping a 4-2 decision to service-academy rival Air Force on March 2.
Freshman Sam Lampman won singles matches in both events to improve 7-1 in singles competition this spring. Lampman earned his first career Patriot League recognition earlier this month, when he was named the conference's Player of the Month for February.
Senior Asika Isoh collected a victory at the top singles position against Air Force, while juniors Roman Cacha, Peter Sienko and Alex Van Velzer, sophomore Austin McCasin and freshman Grant Riechmann all tallied wins opposite The Citadel.
UC Irvine enters the weekend 7-9 overall, but comes in winners of five straight. On March 13, the Anteaters notched a 6-1 victory over Radford. UC Irvine won all three doubles matches and claimed five of six singles decisions in the win. Singles winners for UC Irvine included juniors Rafael Davidian and Shuhei Shibahara and sophomores Jonathan Hammel, Caryl Hernandez and Tyler Pham.
UC Riverside is 2-16 on the season, most recently falling to Richmond, 5-2, on March 12.Freshman Cooper Bridge and sophomore Marcus Vizcarra tallied singles victories for the Highlanders, winning from the third and fifth flights, respectively.
Army will meet both UC Irvine and UC Riverside for the first time in program history.
After this weekend, the Black Knights will finish their California trip with a match against Loyola Marymount on March 19 at 2 p.m. ET.
