WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis will return to the courts for the first time in three months when the Black Knights host the Army Challenge this weekend. Army will play a series of singles and doubles matches against regional foe Marist, as well as North Carolina-Greensboro and Gardner-Webb. Matches will begin Friday at 2 p.m., at Lichtenberg Tennis Center and continue through Sunday morning. For the full schedule of matches, see below.
The Black Knights last competed at the Lehigh Fall Championships and the Harvard Halloween Invite on Oct. 28. Freshman Harrison McCormick totaled a team-best six singles wins (6-7) through the fall tournament season, while fellow plebes Ben Davies and Sam Jang-Milsten both carry three-match winning streaks into 2013.
In doubles play, sophomore Peter Sienko tallied a team-high six victories (6-3), including three alongside senior Rashad Shelton (3-2).
Marist opened 2013 at the Harvard Winter Invite and has yet to play a dual match this calendar year. The Red Foxes defeated Army 5-2 last season in a dual and are led by Joseph Dube and Dalen Klassen who enter the weekend with 14 wins apiece this year.
UNCG has not competed since early November. The Spartans went 9-13 in duals a season ago, including 6-4 in Southern Conference contests. William Albright has totaled a team-high six singles wins through the fall season, while James Dougherty and Randy Phillips enter the weekend with a 6-0 doubles mark.
GWU is the lone team that already has a dual under its belt in 2013 as the Runnin’ Bulldogs fell to No. 18 North Carolina, 6-1, on Jan. 19. Brendan Dempsey was responsible for GWU’s point against the Tar Heels, winning at No. 6 singles in three sets. GWU went 6-16 in 2012.
This weekend’s competition marks the final tune-up before the Black Knights begin dual-match play. Army will hit the road for its first weekend of matches, traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., to face Arkansas on Feb. 1, before Oral Roberts on Feb. 2.
