WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis played a total of 48 matches this weekend as the Black Knights split between the Yale Shootout in New Haven, Conn., and the Dartmouth Shootout in Hanover, N.H. At Dartmouth, Army faced opponents from four different schools in a typical flighted-bracket style tournament, while the Yale matches were played against the host Bulldogs and fellow visitor St. Bonaventure in a non-structured format.
Army went 7-11 in singles and 2-3 in doubles at Dartmouth. Freshman David Proctor and senior Rashad Shelton were the lone Black Knights to collect wins in the main draws. Proctor toppied Stony Brook’s Leon Pan, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the Flight 5 bracket, while Shelton defeated Fontova of Stony Brook, 6-2, 6-2, in Flight 4. Proctor then fell to Jose Raventos of Williams, 6-1, 6-1, in the flight’s semifinal round, and Shelton dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Dartmouth's Chan.
In doubles play, sophomore Peter Sienko and Shelton found success in the consolation bracket after an extra-set exit from the main draw in the first round. Sienko and Shelton lost to Tannenbaum and Chan of the Big Green, 9-7, before winning consecutive matches against SBU’s Forai and Degani (8-5), and Middlebury’s Canpbell and Frons (8-5).
At Yale, Army totaled a 3-16 mark in singles play and went 0-6 in doubles matches against some of the top competition in the region. Three different Black Knights earned wins over the two-day event, as junior Asika Isoh topped St. Bonventure’s Oscar Yanez, 6-2, 6-0, before newcomer Ben Davies defeated Celso de Vera Rehberger, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, of SBU. Junior Henry Jang-Milsten collected Army’s lone victory over Yale, knocking off Daniel Faierman, 6-3, 6-4, on Sunday morning.
Looking ahead on the schedule, Army will have two weeks to decide which of its top players will compete at the ITA Regional Championships. Hosted by Yale, the Regionals are slated for Oct. 18-21.
