ORLANDO, Fla. – Army men’s tennis wrapped up its stay in Florida for spring break with a 4-2 loss to Northern Illinois on Thursday afternoon. The two squads played singles matches only due to space limitations at the courts, as the Huskies handed the Black Knights their third loss of the week.
NIU (11-5) captured the top three match points in straight sets as junior Asika Isoh, who was Army’s (8-5) lone singles winner on Wednesday against South Carolina State, fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 to Axel Lagerlof. Isoh went 1-2 over the week and is 8-3 in duals this spring.
Senior Rashad Shelton (No. 2) and freshman Caison Best (No. 3) also were defeated in straight sets.
Army got on the scoreboard with wins at Nos. 4 and 5 as sophomore Peter Sienko and freshman Harrison McCormick earned their first singles wins of the week. Sienko defeated Jovan Zeljkovic 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4, while McCormick claimed his team-best ninth dual win of the year with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 5. McCormick defeated Max Phillips for the win.
Despite winning the first set 6-3, sophomore Roman Cacha suffered a three-set defeat at No. 6 to Simon Formont. Formont battled back with 6-0 win in the second set before the two battled to a 6-4 third set, in favor of NIU.
