ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Army men’s tennis played an untraditionally scored match against Division II Flagler on Tuesday, with the Black Knights coming away with a 7-5 victory. The two squads played four doubles matches and eight singles contests, all individually scored, with Army sealing the win with five solo victories.
The Black Knights (8-7) bounced back from a Monday loss at UCF to bump their record back above .500. The Saints fell to 5-7 overall after their fifth loss in the last six tries.
The two squads split the four-match doubles series with Army prevailing at Nos. 1 and 2 and Flagler stealing wins at Nos. 3 and 4. Sophomores Henry Jang-Milsten and Asika Isoh captured their fifth straight win and team-leading 12 of the season with an 8-3 victory over Jose Martinez and Stephan Stolz.
Freshmen Alex Van Velzer and Peter Sienko grabbed Army’s other doubles victory on the day, stopping Uriel Oquendo and Inigo Landaluce, 8-3. The pair improved to 4-4 on the season.
Isoh’s four-match singles winning streak came to close with a three-set loss to Martinez at No. 1, but Van Velzer, Sienko, Rommel Verano, Rashad Shelton and Roman Cacha stepped up to earn victories.
Van Velzer clinched his 11th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Landaluce at No. 2, while Sienko knocked off Lennart Wemcken, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 to even his dual match record at 6-6. Verano captured his third win in the last four tries with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Stolz, while Shelton defeated Rafael Mittage, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 7 to jump to 5-0 this spring.
Cacha rounded out the Army winners after knocking off Skyler Engle, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 8 to move to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in duals.
Army’s win over Flagler was its first in three tries. The Saints won matches in 2007 and 2008 to maintain their series lead.
The Black Knights close out their spring break trip to Florida when they travel to Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday for a 10 a.m. match.
