WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army’s winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon as men’s tennis fell to Marist, 4-3. The Black Knights had won four straight since falling to nationally ranked Arkansas in the season opener, including back-to-back matches this weekend, before dropping the decision to the Red Foxes. Individually, freshman Harrison McCormick maintained his undefeated record while junior Asika Isoh earned his fourth consecutive singles victory.
Army (4-2) fell behind 1-0 after Marist (1-0) captured the doubles point with a pair of tight wins. Isoh and McCormick won quickly at No. 1, 8-2, to start the day, before the Red Foxes won at No. 2, 8-5, and No. 3, 8-6. Isoh and McCormick’s doubles win was their fifth of the season as the duo remained undefeated (5-0) in duals this season.
The Black Knights fell behind 2-0 after senior Rashad Shelton dropped his second singles match of the weekend, a 6-0, 6-2 setback to Joris Van Eck at No. 4. Isoh got Army on the board with his fourth consecutive singles win, topping Lorenzo Rossi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1.
Marist had the match in its sights after jumping to 3-1 with freshman Caison Best’s 6-0, 7-5 loss to Dalen Klassen at No. 2. The Red Foxes clinched the match shortly thereafter as Army’s Roman Cacha lost a three-set decision, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 to Joe Dube at No. 6.
Despite the match being already decided, the Black Knights battled to capture the final two points of the contest. McCormick maintained his flawless record in duals (5-0) with a three-set win at No. 5, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, over Fredrick Bjerke. Sophomore Peter Sienko won for the fourth time in five matches, this time in tie-breaking fashion with a 4-6, 6-4, 12-10 win at No. 3 over Will Reznek.
Up next for the Black Knights, Army will host four matches next weekend beginning with future Patriot League foe Boston University on Friday at 3 p.m. The Black Knights will also host Sacred Heart, Quinnipiac and Monmouth.
