WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis began a busy weekend of play with a 5-2 win over Fairfield Friday night at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights improved to 3-1 on the young season by winning three singles matches in straight sets, including junior Asika Isoh’s match-clinching victory at the No. 1 spot. Fairfield fell to 4-2 with the loss.
Isoh defeated Ian Tesmond, 6-4, 6-3, for his second dual win of the season, improving to 2-1 with all three matches played at the No. 1 position. In addition to his singles win, Isoh remained undefeated in doubles play in 2013 by pairing with freshman Harrison McCormick for an 8-3 victory at No. 2. The duo is 3-0 in dual play this season.
To clinch the doubles point, sophomore Peter Sienko and junior Henry Jang-Milsten battled at No. 3 with Erik Kremheller and George Tioutine, as Army came out on top 8-7 (11-9). Sienko and Jang-Milsten improved to 3-1 in dual matches this season.
Also winning singles contests for Army were freshman Caison Best (6-3, 6-0 at No. 2) and sophomore Roman Cacha (6-2, 6-1 at No. 6), before senior Rashad Shelton sealed the match with his three-set victory at No. 4. Shelton defeated Tioutine, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 for his third win of the dual season.
Army’s three-match weekend will continue tomorrow against NJIT. The first serve at Lichtenberg is slated for 2 p.m.
