FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Army men’s tennis faced a daunting task in its season opener as the Black Knights traveled to No. 56 Arkansas on Friday afternoon. Army battled out of the gate in doubles and throughout all six singles contests but the Razorbacks outlasted the Black Knights, 6-1. Freshman Harrison McCormick led the way for Army with a pair of wins in his collegiate dual match debut.
UA’s Mike Ward and Hall Fess got the Razorbacks (5-1) out to a quick lead in doubles play by defeating senior Rashad Shelton and freshman Austin McCasin, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot. Army (0-1) responded, however, as McCormick and junior Asika Isoh leveled the doubles matches with an 8-7 (7-3) victory at No. 2 over Jovan Parlic and Victor Hoang.
The third and decisive doubles match was also decided in tie-breaking fashion, but this one fell in UA’s hands as Christian Lee and Pete Thomason defeated Army sophomore Peter Sienko and junior Henry Jang-Milsten, 8-7 (7-3).
Army fell behind 2-0 after Gregoire Lehmann dispatched Isoh at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, before Hoang bested McCasin at No. 5, 7-6(), 6-1 to make the margin 3-0.
Shelton put up a fight at No. 4 singles as the first set went into extra games and the second set was decided in a tiebreaker. Arkansas came out on top, however, as Fess defeated Army’s lone senior on the court, 7-5, 7-6(9-7) to clinch the match for the Razorbacks.
Down 5-0, McCormick remained steadfast at No. 6 singles, battling to a three-set win over Thomason. McCormick took the first set 7-5, before Thomason overpowered the plebe in the second, 6-2, before a 10-point tiebreaker was won by McCormick, 10-6.
Army will remain in Fayetteville, Ark., for one more day as the Black Knights will play a neutral-site contest against Oral Roberts. The Golden Eagles enter Saturday’s inaugural match against the Black Knights with a 0-3 record. The first serve is slated for noon at Arkansas’ Dills Indoor Tennis Facility.
