WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sprint football junior quarterback Javier Sustaita was named Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday following an eight-touchdown performance in Friday night’s 57-43 win against Post. The win pushed the Black Knights’ College Sprint Football League record to a flawless 4-0, while improving to 4-1 overall.
Facing the Eagles for the first time in program history, Sustaita threw for 353 yards and four touchdowns, completing 64-percent of his passes (25-39) while not throwing an interception. All four of the Troy, Texas native’s passing TDs were to sophomore Tom Jeffers, who totaled a career-high 220 yards on 11 receptions.
Sustaita also rushed for a game-high 76 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.
With the Black Knights behind 43-42 with 4:01 left on the clock, Sustaita connected on all three pass attempts of the drive before rushing in the six-yard score. He then found junior Cody Nyp in the end zone for the two-point conversion, pushing Army’s lead to 50-43.
Following an interception by classmate Mario Turi in Post territory, Sustaita put the exclamation point on the win with another rushing score.
Over five games this season, Army’s starting signal caller has passed for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns, while his six rushing TDs rank first on the team.
Sustaita’s AAA recognition is the second of his career after being recognized following last season's victory at Penn. It also marks the second by a sprint football player this season, after Nyp was honored Oct. 10.
The Black Knights will look to remain perfect in CSFL contests Friday night when they host fellow 2010 league co-champion Penn (4-1, 3-1 CSFL) at West Point’s Shea Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
