The Army sprint football team posted 453 yards of total offense during its 41-12 victory over Franklin Pierce in Collegiate Sprint Football League action on Saturday afternoon at Arthur Hurd Field. The Black Knights improve to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the CSFL, while the Ravens drop to 1-2 and 1-2.
Black Knights junior quarterback James Wartski tossed three touchdowns for the third straight week while completing 13 passes for 252 yards. Junior receiver Zachary Woods had five catches for 51 yards and hauled in a career-best three touchdowns, while freshman running back Marqus Burrell reached the 100-yard rushing plateau for the first time in his career, finishing with 103 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.
Sophomore back Jesse Shackelford ran for 44 yards while scoring his first touchdown of the season, and classmate Warren Kay knocked in two field goals. Senior linebacker Jake Steckler led the defense with nine tackles while also notching a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Senior John Egan had a pair of interceptions, and sophomore Kalaukoa Labonta came away with one. Senior Conor O'Brien registered four tackles and blocked the Ravens' only field goal attempt of the game.
Franklin Pierce freshman quarterback Ryan O'Kelly threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a team-high 83 yards. Sophomore receiver Michael Holdridge caught a pair of touchdowns, hauling in three catches for 44 yards, and sophomore Nick Trochalakis paced the Raven defense with eight tackles and two sacks.
Wartski and Woods connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to give Army a 7-0 advantage 6:42 into the opening quarter. The hosts answered with a touchdown of their own 4:04 later, when Holdridge caught a 20-yard pass from O'Kelly to make the score 7-6 after a failed extra point attempt. Burrell crossed the goal line on a one-yard rush with 2:59 left in the quarter to extend the Black Knights' advantage to eight. Kay was a perfect two-for-two on field goals in the second quarter, as he hit from 34 yards 2:47 into the period before nailing a 30-yard attempt as time expired in the half.
Woods found himself on the receiving end of two more touchdowns in the opening 5:45 of the second half, as Army increased its lead to 34-6. Shackelford scored on a one-yard run with 2:21 left in the third quarter to put the Black Knights up, 41-6, before Franklin Pierce's Holdridge caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from O'Kelly with 7:53 left in the fourth quarter. The Ravens were unsuccessful on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt.
The Black Knights continue their three-game road trip on Friday, Oct. 4, when they meet Cornell for a 7 p.m. contest.
