WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army sprint football team improved to 2-0 for the second year in a row after defeating Post, 38-6, on Friday evening at Shea Stadium. The Black Knights also move to 2-0 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League, while the Eagles drop to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the CSFL.
Army junior quarterback James Wartski completed 23-of-41 passes for 260 yards while tossing three touchdowns and one interception. Sophomore Tucker Van Dyke led the receiving corps with six catches and 121 yards while hauling in a touchdown, and juniors Nathan Degen and Zachary Woods each caught a touchdown. Freshman back Nick Brickous ran for 20 yards on three carries and scored his first career touchdown, senior Dylan Doty returned an interception 10 yards for the first score of his career, and sophomore Warren Kay converted a 23-yard field goal.
Junior James Craft paced the defense with eight tackles and two sacks, while junior David Brown and senior Joe Williams notched seven and six stops, respectively. Six different Black Knights registered a sack in the game, as Army got to the quarterback a season-high seven times. The Black Knights also came away with three interceptions, including picks by Doty, sophomore Kalaukoa Labonta and freshman Andrew Paffett.
For Post, sophomore receiver Jay’Len Mahan caught five passes for 94 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Javon Martin. Mahan also collected 97 yards on four kickoff returns. Martin threw for 102 yards on 7-of-23 passing and had one interception, while freshman running back James Harrington ran for 136 yards on 22 carries.
Sophomore Anthony Jamele and freshman Christopher Leggio each finished with five tackles and one sack, and freshman Shaun Terrell added an interception.
Following Kay’s 23-yard field goal with 5:29 remaining in the opening quarter, Doty ran an interception back 10 yards for a score with 57 seconds remaining to give Army a 10-0 advantage. Woods crossed the goal line after receiving a seven-yard pass from Wartski three minutes into the second frame to extend the hosts’ lead to 17-0. Mahan’s 51-yard touchdown reception brought Post back to within 11, but the Black Knights blocked the extra point attempt to keep the score 17-6.
Wartski connected with Degen on a 24-yard touchdown pass to make the score 24-6 with seven ticks left in the third quarter before Van Dyke and Brickous broke the plane with 7:24 and 2:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, respectively.
Army returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when it hits the road to take on Franklin Pierce for the first time.
