EASTON, Pa. - Junior forward Scott Hawkins scored the first of his two goals 1:38 into the game and that was all of the offense Lafayette needed in a 2-0 win over Army on Saturday afternoon at Mike Bourger' 44 Field at Oaks Stadium. The loss drops Army to 2-7-1 overall on the season and 0-3 in the Patriot League.
Hawkins' goal in the opening minutes of the game followed Mark Price's long run down the sideline into the box. Price then sent a crossing pass to Hawkins who knocked in the shot to give Lafayette a 1-0 advantage over Army (2-7-2, 0-3).
In the second half, freshman Zach Howes made a defensive save to preserve the one-goal lead. Chase Hunter beat Lafayette goalkeeper Scott Backus, but Howes was in the box to knock away Hunter's shot that would have tied the game at 50:30.
The Leopards scored three minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Steve Ference used a centering pass to find Hawkins. Hawkins' first touch shot beat Army goalie A.J. Glubzinski to give Lafayette the 2-0 final. It was Hawkins' team-leading fifth goal of the season.
In goal, Backus was called on to make just one save in his first shutout of the season. Army's Glubzinski, made four saves in his fifth career start. Lafayette outshot Army, 9-5, but faced an 8-3 disadvantage in corner kicks.
