WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army lacrosse team will reach the peak of its fall season this Saturday when the Black Knights host St. John's and Harvard for a fall scrimmage day this Saturday, Oct. 19, at Michie Stadium. The event is open to the public and all three games are free admission.
Army and Harvard will open the day at 11 a.m., followed by Harvard versus St. John's at approximately 12:45 p.m. The Black Knights and Red Storm will faceoff at approximately 2:30 p.m. All three scrimmages will feature four 20-minute sessions with a running clock. Weather permitting, Army will play outside at Michie Stadium with the entire event open to the public. Should weather force the event inside to Foley Athletic Center, it will be closed to the public due to safety issues.
"First and foremost, we're really excited to have two excellent programs coming to Michie Stadium," said head coach eighth-year head coach Joe Alberici. " Our guys have been really enthusiastic and intense throughout our fall practices, and I know they are very excited to go up against somebody other than themselves. We have a lot of new faces, so this will give them a chance to put into practice all that we've been focusing on. These scrimmages will also help our staff gauge what we need to work on moving forward as we prepare for our opener in February."
The Black Knights are about a month into their fall season and played a Black and White scrimmage on Sunday, Oct. 6.
A year after reaching the conference championship game, St. John's posted a 9-4 record in 2013 and went 3-3 in the BIG EAST. Harvard, which also made a 2012 conference championship appearance, authored a 6-8 record last spring and went 2-4 in the Ivy League.
While squaring off on several recent occasions during the fall season, including last year, Army and St. John's have not met during the regular season since 1987. The same can be said for the Black Knights and Harvard, which have not squared-off in the regular season since 1994.
Coming off its eighth-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance in last spring, Army returns 40 players overall, including 2013 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year John Glesener and all-conference selections Alex Daly (faceoff; first team), Sam Somers (goalkeeper; second team) and Jimbo D'Aprile (defensive midfield; second team).
Glesener led the Patriot League and ranked sixth in the NCAA averaging 4.36 points per game in 2013. He went on to garner United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) honorable mention All-America honors. Current junior Sam Somers led the nation with a 7.18 goals against average during his first season as Army's starting net minder last spring. His .587 save percentage ranked second in the Patriot League and 10th in the nation.
