WEST POINT, N.Y. - Coming off a dominant performance in the face-off "x" in a 14-7 win over rival Navy last Saturday, the awards keep rolling in for freshman Alex Daly. Already named Army's top athlete and Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday, he garnered Cascade Rookie of the Week honors as the top freshman in the nation last week.
A rookie from New Market, Md., Daly won 19-of-22 face-offs and added career highs in points (two assists) and ground balls (nine). Despite Navy throwing multiple opponents in the "x," Daly dialed in and won all 12 first-half bouts. Navy did not win a face-off until just over a minute into the third quarter. It marked the most wins in Daly's collegiate career and was the most by an Army player since 2003.
In addition to his exploits in the face-off game, Daly helped initiate Army's offense with a pair of assists. He fed sophomore attackman John Glesener for a goal just six seconds into the game as the Black Knights took a quick 1-0 lead. Daly won the face-off and found Glesener on the left side as the duo tied the Academy record for the quickest goal to start a game for the second time this year. Daly later assisted on a similar play, but this time finding senior attackman Garrett Thul for this third goal of the game with 1:30 remaining in the first half.
Following the victory, eighth-year head coach Joe Alberici said, "Unquestionably, the key to the game was our dominance in the face-off. I've never had a freshman play such a large role in the Army-Navy game as Alex Daly did today. He was phenomenal in there."
Daly is approaching his 100th face-off win, sitting at 97-of-179 (.542) on the season. He is 58-of-99 (586) in five Patriot League games.
The Black Knights improved to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League play. Army heads to Holy Cross on Saturday, April 20, with a chance to clinch the final spot in the 2013 Patriot League Tournament. Face-off is set for 6 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
