CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After authoring his most productive week to date, senior attackman Conor Hayes found rewards in his first-ever Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honor on Monday afternoon. Hayes joined freshman midfielder John Glesener, who picked up his first career Patriot League Rookie of the Week citation, as the first two Black Knights to earn conference honors in 2012.
Hayes recorded back-to-back hat tricks and scored on the opening face-off of two Army wins last week. He tallied career highs in goals (five) and points (six) in a 14-8 win over VMI on Saturday afternoon. A native of Wilmington, Del., Hayes registered his third career hat trick just five minutes into Saturday's game. His six points (5G, 1A) against the Keydets led all players.
Hayes got Army in the board in both games last week, netting a goal seven and 11 seconds into each contest, respectively. His seven-second score was one second off an Army record for quickest goal to start a game. Click here to watch Hayes' first goal of the week against Wagner.
Hayes took 11 shots over two games and came away with eight goals.
Glesener, a highly touted rookie out of Camillus, N.Y., continued to contribute in his second week as a starter on Army's first midfield line. Glesener totaled a career-high three points (2G, 1A) in a 24-7 trouncing of Wagner last Wednesday afternoon before assisting on two goals in the Black Knights' win over VMI three days later. Glesener has started all three games and has totaled seven points (4G, 3A) this season.
Army will take the next seven days to prepare for its first road test of the season, as the Black Knights visit preseason No. 6/6 Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 26. The game will be televised in the central New York region on Time Warner Cable and available in the Hudson Valley on SportsNet New York and Time Warner Cable channel 198. Face-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
