STORRS, Conn. – Freshmen Joe Kozlak and Jonathan Gehrt scored goals as Army skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with Connecticut, Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest at the Freitas Ice Forum.
Army scored once in the first and once in the second period and is now unbeaten in its last three games.
The Black Knights moved to 5-6-2 overall and 5-2-2 in league contests while Connecticut is now 4-7-2 overall and 3-6-1 in conference games.
Army, coming off its first weekend sweep of the season last weekend, held a 31-29 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore Mac Lalor, freshman R.J. Burns and senior Jon Bobb registered assists for Army while Ryan Leets made 27 saves.
Connecticut goalie Garrett Bartus made 13 saves in 30 minutes and Matt Grogan finished in goal with 16 saves in 34 minutes.
Army made the daytrip to Connecticut and jumped out to a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the contest Lalor collected the assist, his fifth of the season on Kozlak’s third goal of the year.
The Huskies tied the game at 1 eight minutes later as Tyler Bouchard posted his second goal of the season, on the power play.
Army held a10-7 advantage in shots on goal during the first period and the game was tied after the opening session.
The Black Knights went back on top in the second period when Gehrt fired in his second goal of the season. Burns picked up his second assist of the season and Bobb his first for a 2-1 Army lead midway through the period.
Evan Carriere tied the game a second time midway through the final period when he netted his second goal of the season.
Each team had chances late in regulation but neither was able to score.
During the five-minute sudden victory overtime session, Army had one shot and Connecticut one shot as the game ended it a tie.
Army will travel to North Andover, Mass., for a non-conference game at Merrimack, Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
GAMES NOTES: Army wore its black sweaters … Army’s starting lineup consisted of Brian Schultz, R.J. Burns, Zak Zaremba, Cheyne Rocha and Mac Lalor with Ryan Leets in net … It marked the 45th start of Leets’ career … Army’s last non-conference game of the season is Tuesday at Merrimack … Army will have a 16-day break for final exams and the holidays and return to action Dec. 27 against the Russian Junior All-Stars at Tate Rink.
