Dec. 4, 2004

Box Score

STORRS, CONN. - Connecticut downed visiting Army with a 2-1 decision in Atlantic Hockey action on Saturday night at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies move to 3-10-1 on the year (2-4-0 Atlantic Hockey) and the Black Knights fall to 4-9-2 on the season (1-7-2).

UConn jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:29 mark in the opening period as Ryan Palmer flicked a quick wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle for his first goal as a Husky.

In the second, Magnuson added the second Connecticut goal when his shot from 20 feet out beat Army netminder Treye Kettwick 15:54 into the stanza.

Chad Fifield cut the deficit to one for Army at 2:45 in the third when his shot from the left side boards hit UConn goalie Scott Tomes and deflected into the net. Freshmen linemates Luke Flicek and Bryce Hollweg were credited with assists on the play.

Army head coach Brian Riley mixed up his line combinations heading into the final period of play, pairing Flicek and Hollweg with senior team captain Fifield. The strategy worked early on, but the equalizer never did come for the Black Knights.

Kettwick made 21 saves on 23 shots for the Black Knights, while his counterpart, Scott Tomes, stopped 28 of 29 attempts.

Army is off for final exams and the holiday break until Dec. 30 when it welcomes St. Clair College from Canada to Tate Rink. The Black Knights' next league games will be Jan. 7-8 for a rematch with the Huskies.
