WEST POINT, N.Y. -Playing with just 17 skaters due to a rash of injuries and one suspension, Army skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with Mercyhurst, Saturday in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest in front of 2,160 fans at Tate Rink.

Army head coach Brian Riley opted to go with only five defensemen in the contest as the Black Knights tied their sixth game this season.

Marcel Alvarez and Mike Hull each scored a goal and handed out an assist and Rob Tadazak made 33 saves as the Black Knights moved to 1-7-6 overall and 1-5-4 in league games this season. Mike Henderson also netted a tally and Maurice Alvarez, Mac Lalor and Jon Bobb collected assists.

Tadazak collected two saves in the first 15 seconds, then made 11 saves in the first period, 10 in the second and 12 in the third period to secure his second tie.

Mercyhurst, coming off a 2-1 win on Friday night, is now 7-7-2 overall and 6-1-2 in league games.

Army jumped out to a 1-0 lead nearly five minutes into the contest. With the referees’ hand up for a penalty against Mercyhurst, Army added an extra skater and was rewarded when Henderson knocked home his third goal of the season and Lalor and Bobb picked up their first collegiate assists.

The Black Knights added to their lead later in the first period, utilizing crisp passing for a 2-0 advantage as Hull netted his fourth goal of the season. Lalor earned his second point of the game and third assist of the season while Marcel Alvarez posted his third assist.

Mercyhurst fought back and tied the game after two periods with a pair of power play goals. Tyler Shiplo cut Army’s lead to 2-1 six minutes into the period with his third of the season and Chris Bodo knotted the game at 2 with his fifth of the season with 45 seconds remaining in the stanza.

Army went back on top in the third period with a power play score of its own. Marcel Alvarez blasted in a shot from just inside the blue line. It marked his first goal of the season. Hull collected his fourth assist and Maurice Alvarez his third assist.

The Lakers, who entered the game in second place in the conference, tied the game at 3 as Paul Chiasson scored his second goal of the season, forcing overtime.

In the five-minute sudden victory overtime, Army had two shots on goal but could not break the tie.

Army will travel to Worcester, Mass., and play Holy Cross, Saturday at 4:05 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Army’s starting lineup consisted of Andy Starczewski, Mike Hull and Mark Dube with Marcel and Maurice Alvarez on defense and Rob Tadazak in goal … A ceremonial faceoff was held with members of Rob Ross’ family prior to the game. Ross, a 2008 West Point graduate, was killed in an accident over the summer. Known for competitiveness, Ross was a key member of the Atlantic Hockey Association regular season championship squad in 2007-08 and four-year contributor. His parents, Debbie and Jim, his sister Katie and brothers Jim and Tom, were part of a pregame ceremony and joined by former hockey players Chase Podsiad, Ken Rowe, Ian McDougall, Jeff Fearing, Chris Spracklen, Drew Pierson, Chris Migliaro, Casey Bickley, Chris Blair, Lyle Gal and Seth Beamer   … Because of a rash of injuries, Army dressed just 17 skaters as coach Brian Riley opted for four full lines and five defensemen … After the game, Army participated in a 20-minute sled hockey contest against the Long Island RoughRiders … The West Point Atoms competed during the first intermission.
