WEST POINT, N.Y.  - Maurice Alvarez scored a third-period goal and Army killed off a Sacred Heart five-minute power play as the Black Knights posted a 3-2 win, Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at Tate Rink.

Thane Heller had a goal and assist and Andy Starczewski was credited with two assists as Army halted a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league games.

Zak Zaremba also scored for Army while John Clark, Mac Lalor and Willie Faust posted assists to help the Black Knights win the season series with Sacred Heart, 2-0-1.

Army goalie Rob Tadazak made 18 saves in a period and eight minutes before he was injured. Ryan Leets played the final 33 minutes and registered seven saves and his second win of the season.

Sacred Heart goalie Andrew Bodnarchuk made 35 saves as Army held a 38-28 advantage in shots on goal.

"We have made it a point of emphasis to better our conditioning and to win the third period," said Army hockey head coach Brian Riley. "We came out and played hard. Give all the credit to the guys, they fought hard."

Army opened the scoring four minutes into the contest when Heller collected his fourth of the season. Clark forced a turnover and Starczewski dug out the loose puck. He fed Heller who gave Army a 1-0 lead at the 3:39 mark. It was the team-leading eighth assist for Starczewski and the second for Clark.

Sacred Heart answered less than a minute later when Chad Filteau picked up his first goal of the season to make it a 1-1 contest after 20 minutes.

Army went back on top with a power play goal at the 4:34 mark. Starczewski passed the puck to Lalor who blasted a shot. Bodnarchuk made the initial save but Zaremba tapped in the rebound for his third goal of the season. Lalor was credited with his second assist and Starczewski his ninth.

"We have simplified our power play," said Riley. "Guys are going to spots and they know their spots and that is creating more scoring opportunities."

Sacred Heart again answered, tying the game late in the second period. Eric Delong netted his team-leading four goal of the season with 1:07 left in the session to knot the game at two.

Army took the lead for good just 44 seconds into the final period. Heller got the puck to Faust who found Alvarez for his first goal of the season. It was the third assist for both Faust and Heller.

"We fought hard," said Alvarez. "We got plenty of shots on goal and fought hard. Killing that five-minute penalty was huge. We tried to take it a minute at a time and clear pucks when we had the opportunity."

The Black Knights out-shot Sacred Heart 17-6 in the final period and did so while killing off a major penalty than spanned five minutes.

Army will make the long day trip to Providence, R.I., Saturday and face Brown in a non-conference contest slated for 7 p.m.
