WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - American International College scored two first-period goals and goaltender Frank Novello made that stand up as the Yellow Jackets downed Army, 2-0, Friday night at Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, Mass.
Army (3-6-1, 0-4-1 Atlantic Hockey) dug itself an early hole, falling behind 2-0 in the opening period. Ron Miller put the hosts on top midway through the first period, beating Black Knights' goaltender Treye Kettwick with a wrister. Andy Walbert then scored his third goal of the season for the Yellow Jackets two minutes later while on the power play.
AIC picked up its first win of the season, improving to 1-4-0 and 1-2-0 in Atlantic Hockey.
Nobody scored in the second period. Kettwick denied Mark Pavli on a short-handed breakaway with under one minute to play in the middle frame. It was Kettwick's second save of a short-handed breakaway in the game. He turned aside Miller's attempt in the first period about six minutes into the contest.
Dave Andros was stuffed on a breakaway of his own with 3:11 left in the game. It was one of 14 saves in the third period for Novello, who finished with 34 saves on the night to record the shutout.
Kettwick registered 21 saves in goal for the Black Knights.
Army is off until next Friday when the Black Knights welcome defending Atlantic Hockey champions Holly Cross to West Point for a two-game series.
