Canisius Tops Army, 3-2

Nov. 6, 2004

Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. -Canisius scored twice in the third period and then withstood a furious rally in the final four minutes to overcome a determined Army team, 3-2, Saturday night in front of 1,718 fans at Tate Rink.

The Black Knights (3-5-1, 0-3-1 Atlantic Hockey) applied constant pressure on the Golden Griffins' goal throughout the final four minutes of the third period, but the equalizer just would not come.

Freshman Robb Ross potted his third goal of the season for Army, answering a Canisius tally just 30 seconds earlier to draw the hosts' within one at 3-2. However, Griffins goalie Bryan Worosz was the story the rest of the way, preserving his squad's second win in as many nights. Canisius (3-4-1, 2-0-0) defeated Bentley Friday night.

Worosz made 31 saves as Army outshot Canisius by a 33-16 margin. Black Knights' netminder Treye Kettwick made 13 saves in the loss.

Canisius drew first blood with an unassisted goal by Andrew Dawe 13 minutes into the contest. Dawe broke in on a two-on-one and slid a shot between the legs of Kettwick, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage that they would take to the locker room.

In the second period, Brad Howard receieved a length-of-the-ice pass from Justin Fagan and raced in on Worosz all alone, picking the upper left-hand corner of the net for his first collegiate goal. Fagan's pass and Howard's finish brought the 1,718 rabid spectators to their feet.

Griffin winger Greg Brown notched his first college goal on the power play at 3:16 of the third period, restoring Canisius' lead. Billy Irish-Baker tallied at 6:36, giving the Griffs a brief two-goal advantage.

Army hits the road next Friday for an Atlantic Hockey tilt at American International in Springfield, Mass. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
