BUFFALO, N.Y. - Canisius scored three goals in the third period to erase a 2-1 Army lead after two en route to a 4-2 victory Friday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena in Buffalo, N.Y.
Army's loss, coupled with a 2-2 tie between Bentley and Holy Cross, means the Black Knights can clinch eighth place in the Atlantic Hockey league standings with a win on the last day of the regular season Saturday afternoon. Army is one point ahead of idle American International College in the standings. An eighth-place finish would assure the Black Knights of hosting the league's play-in game on Tue., March 8 at 7 p.m. An AIC loss in its season finale Saturday night would also clinch eighth place for Army.
The Black Knights (10-19-3, 5-15-3 Atlantic Hockey) received goals from freshman Robb Ross and sophomore Brady Dolim in the first 40 minutes of the contest. However, Canisius (15-14-4, 13-7-3) capitalized on two power plays and added a short-handed marker in the final frame to pull away late.
Brad Roberts made 28 saves in a losing effort for Army.
Ross' goal was his 10th of the season as the plebe extended his team-leading point total to 18. Current senior Chris Garceau tied for the team lead his plebe year in 2001-02. Dolim's goal was the first of his career.
Army and Canisius reconvene at the Buffalo State Sports Arena for a Saturday matinee. Faceoff in the regular-season finale is set at 4 p.m.
