WEST POINT, N.Y. - Nationally ranked Robert Morris scored three first-period goals and then clamped down defensively to beat Army, 4-1, Saturday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at a sold-out Tate Rink.
Army racked up 28 shots on goal in the final period and 48 for the game but managed to score just one goal.
Eric Levine made 47 saves for Robert Morris, ranked #19 in the latest national polls. The Colonials improved to 10-5-2 overall and 5-4-1 in league play.
Cheyne Rocha scored the Army goal off of a Shane Hearn assist. Goalie Rob Tadazak made 24 saves but the Black Knights fell to 7-9-2 overall and 7-4-2 in league games.
The Black Knights posted a season-high 48 shots on goal but saw their two-game winning streak halted in front of a crowd of 2,626, the third sell out of the season at Tate Rink.
Army held its annual House of Blues night to help raise prostate cancer awareness and wore its blue sweaters with blue socks and laces. Rocha, Army's senior captain who was instrumental in organizing the campaign, participated in a ceremonial faceoff. His father, Larry, a cancer survivor, dropped the puck in an emotional evening.
Robert Morris, which has its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped on Friday, jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Greg Gibson scored his second goal of the season.
Army tied the game three minutes later when Rocha fittingly scored his first goal of the season. Hearn won the faceoff back to Rocha who blasted in a long shot. It was his fourth career score and second assist of the season for Hearn.
Robert Morris went back on top with six minutes remaining in the first period as Cody Wydo registered his 14th goal of the season.
The Colonials made it a two-goal game later in the period. Andrew Blazek hit the crossbar and the puck bounced in with four seconds left in the session.
Army held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal in the second period but neither team scored,
The Black Knights had several power play chances in the first eight minutes of the final period but could not beat Levine.
Army had another opportunity to close the gap but Andy Starczewski hit the post.
Robert Morris closed the scoring with an empty net goal.
Army will return to action Jan. 11 and 12 in Colorado Springs, Colo., against Air Force. Friday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Eastern while Saturday's contest will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network and will face-off at 3 p.m. Eastern.
