WEST POINT, N.Y. - -
Senior pommel horse specialist Garrek Hojan-Clark (Brookfield, Wis./Salto Gymnastics) garnered Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors Monday after capturing the pommel horse title over the weekend at the West Point Gymnastics Open. It is the second time this season that Hojan-Clark has earned AAA Athlete of the Week honors.
Ranked No. 1 in the country heading into the weekend competition and unbeaten on pommel horse, Hojan-Clark's winning performance Friday evening helped Army finish runner-up among a seven-team field at the Open in equaling its highest finish.
Hojan-Clark added another honor to his long list of accomplishments with his winning performance the next night in the individual finals, posting a score of 15.0 as the lone gymnast to score in that range in an event considered as the most difficult of all the six routines.
Hojan-Clark, a three-time NCAA qualifier, is just the fourth Black Knight crowned a champion on pommel horse at the West Point Open and first since 2011 when former teammate Jonathan Hoey earned that honor.
The Black Knights will be idle this week, returning to action Feb. 16 when the team heads to Atlanta, Ga., to compete with Air Force and Navy for the All-Academy title.
