WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior pommel horse specialist Garrek Hojan-Clark (Brookfield, Wis./Salto Gymnastics) was awarded Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors following his winning performance against No. 4 Penn State on Saturday. He is the first gymnast to be honored since three (to include himself) were honored in 2011.
Hojan-Clark, a three-time NCAA Qualifier who headed into last year's NCAA Championship meet ranked No. 8 in the country, did not disappoint in the season opener for both teams. The Wisconsin native edged Penn State's Felix Aronovich's 15.35 with his meet-high 15.4 to tie his own school record that he set twice in 2012. Hojan-Clark's win denied the Nittany Lions from sweeping medalist honors in all six events.
The last time Hojan-Clark earned AAA honors was his sophomore year when he was crowned an Eastern champion on pommel horse.
The Black Knights, ranked No. 13 in the NCAA Gymnastics preseason poll, head to Air Force, listed No. 11, Saturday to take on the Falcons in a dual match that begins at 3 p.m. (ET) at the Cadet West Gym. Army will be looking for its first win over its service-academy rival since posting a 198.05-185.80 decision in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2007.
