Gymnasts Fall Short At NCAA Qualifier

NORMAN, Okla. - Eight Army gymnasts were among the individual qualifiers competing at the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships hosted by the University of Oklahoma, but the Black Knights came up short of advancing past Thursday's Qualifier at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Seniors Chase Brown and Jonathan Hoey, along with sophomore Nicholas Fettinger, turned in Army's highest finishes in the evening session as each placed 22nd in their specialty among a group of 40-plus competitors.

Brown scored a 14.25 on floor exercise, Hoey recorded a 13.9 on pommel horse and Fettinger registered a 14.2 on parallel bars, which was just 0.3 shy of his career high. It was Hoey's third straight year competing at the NCAA meet and second for Brown, who also turned in a 13.6 on high bar.

"Everyone hit tonight, and I was happy to see our seniors, Chase (Brown) and Jon (Hoey), go out with a bang in their last collegiate meet," said Army head coach Doug Van Everen. "They both did an awesome job as well as everyone else on the squad."

Rounding out the rest of Army's contingent was junior Garrek Hojan-Clark, who tied for 26th on pommel horse (13.45); juniors Jared Breeden (12.85) and Ikaika Jakub (12.6) competing on still rings; with freshmen Alex Ganz and Jeremy Cahill turning in solid performances in their first NCAA meet. Ganz tied for 31st on parallel bars (13.75)and Jeremy Cahill was 27th on high bar (13.7).

It was the third straight year Hojan-Clark qualified on pommel horse and second straight for Breeden and Jakub.

Army competed in the evening session with No. 1 ranked Oklahoma along with No. 4 Illinois, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 8 California, No. 9 Temple and No. 12 Air Force. The host Sooners (356.2) were edged by Illinois (356.25) for first-place honors with California (351.15) grabbing third in advancing to Friday's team finals.

In the afternoon session, No. 2 Penn State (353.00), No. 3 Stanford (348.50) and No. 6 Michigan (353.450) finished in the top three to qualify for the finals.
