SAN JOSE, Calif. -
Juniors Jared Breeden and Nicholas Fettinger were runner-up on vault and parallel bars, respectively, turning in Army's top performances as the Black Knights placed third at the All-Academy Championships hosted at San Jose State University's Spartan Gym Saturday afternoon.
The No. 12th-ranked Black Knights (317.6) trailed No. 9 Air Force (327.8) and No. 13 Navy (325.65) in the team scoring. The defending champion Falcons swept five of the six team event titles with the Midshipmen posting the top mark of 53.4 on parallel bars with Army a close second at 52.9.
Breeden recorded a season-high 14.25 registering the second-highest score of the meet on vault behind the winning mark of 14.65 posted by all-around winner Andrew Faulk of Navy. Breeden turned in Army's top marks in two other events. He recorded a 13.55 on floor exercise in besting teammate Chase Brown by five-hundreds of a point, along with posting a 13.95 for his third highest score this season on still rings that earned fifth place.
Fettinger's parallel bars score of 13.45 (his second highest of the season) tied with Navy's Aaron Ingram for second place behind the winning mark of 13.7 recorded by Faulk, a double winner in the meet. Army freshman Alex Ganz tied with Air Force's Josh Ramos for fifth place with 13.35s as Navy claimed three of the top four spots in that discipline. Ganz was also third in the all-around scoring with a 76.9.
Junior Garrek Hojan-Clark tied with Faulk for third-place honors on pommel horse with a 13.9 in finishing behind James Okamoto of Air Force's winning mark of 14.6. Okamoto also captured high bar as the Falcons claimed four of the six individual event titles.
Junior Gregory Fearnley rounded out Army's top performances in the six events with a 12.8 on high bar with Brown close behind with a 12.75.
The Black Knights face a tough challenge hosting Air Force in the season's first dual match at Gross Sports Center Friday evening at 6 p.m.
