April 26, 2005

I was not able to write a journal last week, I was too busy trying to write some papers and rest up. So, I will get everyone caught up. We just got back last night from winning the Patriot League Championships, which has been one of our goals since the beginning of the season. In doing so, we shut out Navy for the season, beating them all three times that we saw them this year, which was nice.

Before I go on about Patriots, last weekend we traveled to Akron, Ohio to play a tournament at Firestone Country Club. We stayed in a villa right on the 16th green, only about 150 yards from the 18th green where many famous golf moments have occurred: Tiger's shot in the dark to win the World Championships in 2001, just to name one. It was a great experience to play a great course like Firestone, and definitely one of the toughest that I have ever played.

Well, this past weekend is what we were working for all year, to win the league championships and earn the automatic bid to Regionals. This is our second straight league championship and we have 4 of the 6 guys that played this weekend coming back for our title defense next year. We put together three solid rounds on a short, but tricky, golf course. Coach would say that the course was from a "pre Pro-V1 era" meaning the course was short. Many of the fairway bunkers were not in play because the ball flies so far now, but the small greens made up for the lack of distance. Bucknell played very well the whole tournament and made us have to work for the title and post a good final round in order to win the tournament. It was certainly a team effort, and we would not have been able to win the tournament if everybody had not been playing solid.

Sunday was very cold all day, which caused the scores to jump a little from the first day. We had the best team score in two of the three rounds and only were off the low score by one stroke in the second round to Bucknell. We put up the best team score on Sunday to clinch the title, which is a testament to the kind of depth that our team has. We placed five guys in the top ten.

Next weekend, we are traveling to play in Rhode Island's home tournament. We know nothing about the tournament or the golf course, so it should be interesting. A few guys are taking the weekend off to get caught up on work and rest, and to give the younger guys a chance to experience what traveling is all about.

Once we get back, we should find out where we are going to play NCAA Regionals. We could go to Palo Alto, CA, South Bend, IN, or Nashville, TN. All three sites this year have unbelievable courses and we will be excited wherever we go. It should be an awesome experience.
