Sept. 16, 2004

We just got back from Nebraska, and we are all very exhausted, wind-burned, and ready to get back out to the course to redeem ourselves. We did not have the best showing at Nebraska, but we got the first tournament under our belts. The first tournament is always tough because none of us have played a competitive round of golf since NCAA Regionals last year. We are not able to play tournaments in the summer to keep our competitive edge because we are all going to military schools and doing West Point details. With the first tournament out of the way, we can look to play well and win future tournaments.

The course we played in Nebraska was a very good golf course. It was designed by Pete Dye. He is known as one of the great golf course designers, and he has designed many of the famous courses that are seen on TV every weekend. It was very testing, and when you add the 30-mph winds like we experienced, it made it a true test of golf. I think that the winds and tough conditions will help us out in the long run. As we learned at the Patriot League Championships last year (it was raining sideways), the weather can do anything, and we must be prepared to play in any type of weather.

Luckily, we are not going to be hurt by our performance at Nebraska. I am not saying that we played horribly, but we certainly did not play to our ability. Last week I mentioned that one way to get a bid to NCAA Regionals is to be one of the top three teams in our district. No one from our district played in the Nebraska tournament, so it will not affect our district ranking.

Right now we are all trying to get caught up on schoolwork. I know for Pete, Mark and I (we are all Behavioral Science & Leadership majors), last week and this week have been very hectic because of graded events and a lot of missed work. In between tournaments, we are trying hard to make things up and get ahead on future assignments before we leave again on Friday.

This weekend we are traveling to Central Connecticut's tournament. This is going to be a big weekend for our team for a couple of reasons. First, this is our first big district tournament. Many of the top teams from the district will be there, and we are going to need to play well so that we can set ourselves up to be one of the top three teams in the district. Also, this is the first weekend that plebes are going to be traveling with us. Patrick Beverly and Joey Cave have established themselves so far as the top plebes, and they are going to have a chance to get in the line-up and play in the tournament this weekend.

I am looking forward to this weekend. If we can play like I know that we can on Central Connecticut's golf course, then we have a good shot at winning this tournament and setting ourselves up for a good district run.
