WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army golf team will wrap up its fall season this weekend at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C.
Western Carolina will host the 13-team event at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley with 18 holes on both Saturday and Sunday.
In addition to Army and Western Carolina, the field includes defending champion Appalachian State, Belmont, Colgate, Elon, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Guilford, High Point, Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne, Samford and Wofford.
The Black Knights were faced with some travel difficulties because of Hurricane Sandy. Originally scheduled to fly out of LaGuardia International, the team instead began their travel from Albany and arrived in time for a Friday practice round.
Senior Matt Philie, junior Anthony Kim, sophomore Robby Hill and freshmen Marcus Plunkett and Eric Peng will represent Army at the 36-hole event.
Kim is coming off a victory at the Service Academy Classic, his third career win. He has played nine rounds and is averaging a 73, with two rounds under par.
Philie has played six rounds and is averaging a 75.5 with one under-par round while Plunkett is averaging a 78 in his nine rounds. He has also has a pair of rounds under par.
Hill has competed in nine rounds with a 79 average while Peng is averaging a 74.6 through his six rounds.
Army shared the team title with Air Force in its last competition at the Service Academy Classic at Trump National in Colts Neck, N.J.
