WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army golf team will continue its challenging fall schedule, Monday and Tuesday at the Service Academic Classic. Trump National in Colts Neck, N.J., will serve as host of the annual matchup that includes Army, Navy and Air Force.
Fifty-hour holes are scheduled for the three-team tournament, including 36 holes on Monday and an 18-hole final round on Tuesday.
Each team will utilize six golfers with the lowest four scores being counted towards the team title. In addition, each academy will have three individuals.
“It’s fun to compete against the other academics,” said third-year Army golf coach Brian Watts. “This is always a special event and we are excited to compete.”
Army will utilize Sunday’s practice round at Trump National, a par-72, 7,100-yard layout that was designed by U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate, to finalize its lineup. The links-inspired design features water on several holes.
Army is coming off an 11th-place finish at the 13-team Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate where the Black Knights shot an 881, a 77-stroke improvement over last year’s score.
Freshman Marcus Plunkett, fresh off of a pair of under-par rounds in Tennessee, classmate John Lee who had two even-par rounds and senior captain Matt Philie will all be in the lineup for Army. Junior Anthony Kim and freshman Eric Peng have also secured spots. Sunday’s qualifying round will determine the final two players and who will compete as an individual.
Army beat Navy 8.5-2.5 in a dual match in Paramus, N.J. in September.
Air Force has played in four events this fall, with a ninth-place finish at the Mark Simpson Invitational and a 15th-place effort at the Brickyard Collegiate Championships in Macon, Ga., last week.
Navy has competed in three tournaments this season. The Midshipmen placed 11th in the 19-team Philadelphia Big Five Classic in Huntington Valley, Pa., sixth of 15 teams at the Navy Fall Classic and second of five squads in the ECAC Championships.
Army will conclude its fall season Nov. 3 and 4 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C.
