WEST POINT, N.Y. Adelphi University won the team title and Merchant Marine Academy’s Nic Zoretic won in a playoff over Army’s Joey Cave to highlight play in the Junior Mulekicker Classic, Tuesday at West Point Golf Course.
Adelphi shot a team total of 303 to claim the overall title on the par-70 layout. All four Army golfers competed as individuals.
Zoretic, Cave and Adelphi’s Mauricio Saavedra all finished at four-over 74, setting up a three-person playoff under sunny skies. Cave and Zoretic each birdied the 485-yard 17th hole, eliminating Saavedra. Cave and Zoretic both made par on the 493-yard par-5 and again when they played 17th a second time.
On 18 for the third time of the day and with a slight drizzle starting to fall and a small gallery following, Cave outdrove Zoretic, who missed the fairway right. Both golfers missed the green with their second shots and chipped on with their third. Zoretic, putting first, sank his and Cave’s just missed, giving medalist honors to Zoretic after four playoff holes.
Nassau Community College was second in the team scoring with a 306, followed by Fairleigh Dickinson (312), Monmouth (313) and Dominican (330).
Cave was the top Army finisher, followed by James Raymond, who shot nines of 35-43 to finish with a 78. Austin Rhymer shot an 82, one stroke ahead of Wes Carver (83).
The Army golf team will return to action Oct. 15 at the Sky Hawk Classic in Martin, Tenn.
