WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army golf team is back on the tee this weekend at the The Doc Gimmler tournament hosted by St. John’s University. The event, formerly known as The McLaughlin, will be played at the Red Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Army will utilize the five-man team of Marcus Plunkett, Robby Hill, Justin Pagila, Eric Peng and Brandon Baerwaldt. Baerwaldt will be making his season debut. The remaining quartet helped produce a fourth-place finish at last weekend’s Colgate Invitational.
“We’re looking forward to competing at Bethpage,” head coach Brian Watts said. “Most of the guys haven’t played this course before so Friday’s practice round will be a key part of our preparation. It’s a pretty straightforward course. There are some low numbers to be had if you hit it well and make a few putts. We’ve had a good week of practice, and we’re ready to go.”
Bethpage Red plays at a distance of 7,014 yards. The par 70 layout was opened in 1933. The famed Bethpage Black Course hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open events and most recently, The Barclays in 2012.
Army is one of 15 schools participating in this weekend’s event, which will include 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. In addition to the Black Knights and host Red Storm, Columbia, Florida Southern, Harvard, IUPUI, Johnson & Wales, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Princeton, St. Thomas Aquinas, Seton Hall, Temple, Navy and Yale will compete.
