ORLANDO, FLA. - After one round of play at the NCAA East Regional, the Army golf team sits in 27th place with a combined score of 314. The Black Knights are 30 strokes behind top-ranked Georgia, which leads the pack with an 18-hole total of 284.
Army began the day on the tenth tee as the five-man contingent posted five birdies on the back nine. Senior captain Austin Luher collected a total of three birdies during the round to finish at one-over-par 73, tying him for 27th place overall.
Meanwhile, Joey Cave, playing in his second straight regional, started the tournament strong with a birdie on the 11th hole but faltered a bit down the stretch. Cave, who sits in a tie of 66th, parred 10 holes and birdied both holes 11 and 16 to finish with a first round score of 76.
Freshman Sam Walenz is three strokes behind Cave with a seven-over 79, finishing strong with four straight pars to place tied for 109th. Walenz saved par on eight of 18 holes and added two birdies on the day.
Patrick Beverly, a second team All-Patriot League selection, fired a birdie on the seventh hole (a par 4). He also parred six holes and finished tied for 137th with a 14-over score of 86.
Finally, Adam Renfroe rounded out the Army contingent with a 14-over par 86 to place tied with Beverly in 137th. After getting off to an 11-over start on the back nine, Renfroe shot just three-over par during the final nine holes.
Jonathan Jackson of North Carolina paced the 141-player field, with a six-under 66. The top 10 teams from each of the three regionals advance to the NCAA Tournament in Sunriver, Ore. Army is 17 strokes behind 10th place Jacksonville (297). The Black Knights tee off second round action on Friday afternoon from the first tee at 12:59 p.m. from the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.
