WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Marcus Plunkett was named Most Valuable Player and Brandon Baerwaldt and Robby Hill also collected awards as the Army golf team handed out its varsity letters and team awards, Tuesday night at the Groves Training Center.
Third-year head coach Brian Watts served as master of ceremonies and praised the team’s dedicated Officer Representatives as well as members of the golf team. Watts noted the 8.5-2.5 victory over Navy in which Army didn’t lose a match, just tied on the way to the largest margin of victory in the event. He also praised the squad for tying Air Force for top honors at the Service Academy Classic.
Plunkett, from Pontre Vedra Beach, Fla., finished second at the Patriot League Championship and was named a first team All-League selection as well as league Rookie of the Year. Plunkett played in 27 rounds and averaged a 75. He finished in the top-10 on four occasions, shot a low round of 68 and recorded three rounds of par or better.
Baerwaldt, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev., was named the team’s Most Improved Golfer. He competed in 19 rounds, finished in the top-10 twice, and was named a second-team all-Patriot League choice after a stellar final round to finish ninth.
Hill, a sophomore from Springfield, Ill., collected Most Inspirational Golfer honors. He shared the team lead in rounds played with Plunkett and secured three top-10 showings. He had one round of par or better. Earlier this week, he was named to the Golf Academic All-Patriot League squad, the lone sophomore on the five-member team.
In addition to Plunkett, Baerwaldt and Hill, senior Matt Philie, junior Harrison Florence and freshmen Brandon Roberts and Eric Peng earned varsity letter.
