WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army golf team will begin their quest for the 2014 Patriot League golf title Saturday morning when the first of three rounds tees off at the West Point Golf Course. The Black Knights are the pre-tournament favorite, earning seven first-place votes and 89 points in the poll conducted by the conference's coaches and sports information directors.
The Black Knights finished one point ahead of Patriot League newcomer Loyola, who were named first on eight of the 16 ballots. Navy occupies the third spot, while Lehigh finished fourth with one first-place vote. Bucknell, Lafayette, Colgate and Holy Cross round out the preseason prediction.
The West Point Golf Course will play at par 70 and 6,142 yards. The course has hosted the Patriot League Championship four times. The Black Knights captured the title in 1992 and 2002, finishing third in 1997 and 2009.
The venue played host the Stars & Stripes Invitational in October. Seven of the eight Patriot League squads participated in the event. The Black Knights captured the team championship while 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Marcus Plunkett was the individual medalist.
Army has captured 10 Patriot League championships, more than any other program. The Black Knights' last conference title came in 2011.
The first round will get underway at 8 a.m. Army, Navy, Loyola and Lehigh will begin on the first tee, while Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Bucknell will all tee off on No. 10. Sunday's tee times and starting locations will be determined by Saturday's results.
