NESHANIC STATION, N.J. Fresh off its third place finish at the Patriot League Championships, the Army golf team traveled to New Jersey Tuesday to participate in the Peacock Invitational hosted by St. Peter’s College. The Black Knights placed fourth as a team with a composite score of 322, and sophomore Adam Renfroe tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard.
“I wanted to give our younger guys a chance to compete,” stated Army head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. “These end-of-year events are great opportunities for our junior varsity golfers to gain experience. They played a tough course and battled the wind all day, but they gained a lot from it.”
Renfroe, who competed in the 2006 Patriot League Championships, provided Army with its best score of the day with a plus-five 77. The Tyler, Texas, native shot one-over par 37 on the front nine and carded a 40 on the back nine of the par-72, 7,069 yard Neshanic Valley Golf Course.
Gary Beene, David Padgalskas, James Raymond and Minou Pak rounded out the list of Black Knight goflers that made the trip.
Beene placed 15th shooting an 81 in the 18-hole one round invitational. Padgalskas and Raymond tied for 16th, along with three other golfers, each firing 10-over par 82s. Pak completed the field with an 84, finishing tied for 24th.
Rider University won the event with a 311, 23 strokes over par, thanks in large part to individual medalist Tyler Brewington who shot a 35 on the back nine to finish with a one-under par score of 71.
Army will wrap up its 2007 spring slate this weekend when it competes at the URI Northeast Invitational. The first groups will tee off at 8 a.m. on Friday with play to conclude on Saturday.
