NESHANIC STATION, N.J. Sophomore Matt Krembel won his second career tournament and the Army golf team finished third at the Peacock Invitational, Tuesday at Neshanic Valley Golf Club.
Army actually tied for the low score with a round of 316 but finished third when fifth-man scores were utilized to break the three-team tie. Iona won the event, followed by Central Connecticut State in the 15-team event.
Krembel shot a two-over-par 74 and claimed the individual title on a scorecard playoff. Krembel birdied No. 9, a par-5 hole that has the lowest handicap on the front nine. Nicholas LaBanca of Manhattan parred the hole as Krembel won his second event.
“We were competitive in a team environment and that’s what we were looking for,” said Army head golf coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. “The conditions were miserable: high winds, cold and wet, really what we have played in all spring.”
Sam Walenz and Wes Carver shot 80s, William Park an 82 and James Raymond an 86 to help the Black Knights to their best finish of the spring season.
“We still need to improve on bringing rounds in,” said Clevenger. “We’re still throwing strokes away and that caught up with us. All in all, we were competitive and got some momentum going into our next events. Really, when the conditions were as tough as they were today, you are just out there trying to make the least amount of mistakes and make as many pars as you can. The team fought hard coming down the backside, we just let some strokes get away from us on the last few holes.”
Army will play its final tune-up for the Patriot League Golf Championships Monday and Tuesday at the 54-hole Mount St. Mary’s Invitational in Littlestown, Pa. Army finished second in the event a year ago.
Notes: Army finished tied for first at the Davidson Invitational on Oct. 12-14 earlier this season ... Matt Krembel won the Mount St. Mary’s Invitational a year ago and helped his team to a second-place finish ... Bucknell was the only other Patriot League team in the field and finished fourth, five strokes behind Army.
