Army Golf Moves Up One Spot

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. The Army golf team shaved 13 strokes off of its first round total and moved up one spot to finish 17th at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate, Tuesday at the 6,831-yard Kingsmill Resort.

Army shot a 313 during Monday’s opening round and improved to 17th in the team standings with a 300 at the famed course. An early morning frost delayed the start of Tuesday’s 18-hole final round.

Matt Krembel finished tied for eighth with a one-under-par 70 to lead the Black Knights. Sam Walenz shot an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for 28th.

Liberty University’s Robert Karlsson shot a one-under-par 141 to earn medalist honors and helped his squad to the team title. Liberty shot a 290 on Tuesday to finish at 574, four strokes in front of Campbell. Southern Illinois (588), Temple (592) and James Madison (594) rounded out the top five.

“We took some small steps,” said Army head golf coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. “We’ll try to shore up our lineup a little better this weekend and try to get closer to where we need to be (for the Patriot League Championships). We’re still not getting five guys playing consistently. This was a decent step for us. Monday’s round hurt us. We didn’t finish well and that ended up hurting us.”

Krembel, who opened with a 75, shot a one-under 70 on Tuesday and recorded his second top-10 finish of the season. Walenz rebounded from a 78 with an even-par round. William Park shot a 159 for the event to finish tied for 94th, three strokes in front of Adam Renfroe who finished in a tie for 97th. Mark Garrison took three strokes off his first round total and finished at 163.

“We’re still a few weeks away from where we want to be,” said Clevenger. “All and all it wasn’t a bad week, we took some small steps. This weekend will be a good barometer for us. The biggest thing for us is we need to have five guys playing well at the same time and we’re not doing that right now.”

Army will have a quick turnaround before its next event, traveling to Maryland on Thursday to compete in the Lacrosse Homes Invitational in Grasonville, Md., Saturday and Sunday.
